Asha is the main protagonist of Disney's animated feature film, Wish. She is a 17-year-old girl (bordering on 18) from Rosas who, after learning the truth about the kingdom's wishes, makes a plea to a star in order to retrieve them.

She is the daughter of Sakina as well as Sabino's granddaughter. She has a pet goat named Valentino.

Description

Ariana DeBose, Asha's voice actress, described her as being kind of like her in some ways: "She's got many parts to her, she's so smart, she's got a great sense of humor, and she's trying to take care of people she loves most in the world. She's a leader and doesn't realize it. She's just living and doing, and learning along the way, she doesn't always get it right, which is the definition of being human."

Physical appearance

Asha is a 17-year-old girl with light hazel eyes, brown, freckled skin, and black, waist-length hair. She has diamond-shaped earrings and magenta beaded necklace. She wears a light purple dress over a purple long-sleeved dress. She also wears two magenta anklets around her left ankle, matching her accessorized necklaces, along with deep-purple pointed flats.

Personality

Asha is kind, loving, and compassionate and cares deeply about her family, friends, and the people of Rosas. She is brave and optimistic; she believes that everyone in Rosas should have their wishes granted and is determined to free the people's wishes. However, although her strong compassion and empathy for others is mostly a good quality, Asha describes it as a weakness as well. When stressed, she can act somewhat dorky and silly, although she is a hard worker and a good listener. She can also be somewhat talkative.

• Magic: Before parting ways, Star gave Asha a magic wand and upon taking it, she gained magical powers of her own, acting as some sort of fairy godmother.

• Asha is of Northern African and Southern European ancestry.
• Asha's first appearance is not in Wish, but instead in Once Upon A Studio, a commemorative Disney short.
• Asha is Disney's first Afro-Iberian heroine to headline a feature film.
• Asha's cloak during the time she was wanted and her magic wand at the film's ending resemble that of Cinderella's Fairy Godmother.
  • The name "Asha" is of Arabic origin. Meaning "Alive and Well". But has several meanings depending on the language. There are also two meanings in the following languages:
    • One is in Hindi, from the Sanskrit "आशा" (āśā) meaning "desire", "wish", or "hope", which seems to be closely linked to the feature film.
    • The other is in Swahili meaning "life".
    • In addition, the name also comes from a very popular old Spanish song from Andalusia that dates back to the year 800 AD in the 9th century called "Tres morillas". The song mentions three names, one of them being Asha. The other two were Fátima and Marién.
  • During her design, Asha was rumored to be a princess.
    • In an interview with Animation Scoop, director Chris Buck confirmed that Asha is not part of royalty, which is why she is not a princess and is not part of the royal family.
      • However, she was interviewed to become the King’s apprentice, which meant that if she were hired instead of denied, she would be training to become a future leader or successor.
